Competitive fishing events are competitions where prizes are awarded based on fishing success, such as species, size, weight and/or number of fish.

Competitive Fishing Events: Background & Survey

Although competitive fishing events are often great community fundraisers and offer opportunities for anglers to show off their skills, there are potential downsides. Increased angling pressures can have significant impacts on fish populations, which is why licences for competitive fishing events were introduced by the Government of Alberta in 2006.

The Government of Alberta is gathering feedback from the public on how it currently regulates sportfishing and competitive fishing events in the province.
